How to Save a Life (RP with [livejournal.com profile] doesntdosheep & <user site="livejou

Life was very, very good for Leonard McCoy.

Not that long ago, he had thought that his life was basically over. Everything had been taken away from him, and all it seemed he had left was drink. Which he had been more than happy to drown himself in.

But then Tonia had come into his life. Now he had his daughter, his home, his practice and her. Even if she hadn't literally been an a guardian angel sent to him, he would have thought her one anyway. She was his angel and always would be. Because of her, he was actually living again.

"Bye, Daddy! Love you!"

"Bye, sweetheart," Leonard said with a smile after giving Joanna a hug and kissing her head.

Standing back, he then watched as his daughter climbed on the school bus. Once she was seated, the driver pulled away from the end of the drive leading to their cabin. Leonard watched as the bus disappeared down the road, a smile spreading across his face as Joanna waved to him through the back window. He waved back, so glad that she was happy at her new school and thriving.

Once the bus was gone, he turned to head up the drive back up to the cabin, barely registering the sound of a motorcycle coming around the curve down the road.

Sometimes, Tonia felt like she was over staying her welcome. Not that she wanted to leave. She loved being on Earth and she loved being with Leonard. It had been so long since she had felt true love, and she didn't want to leave, even though she knew someday she would have to.

Which meant she was going to make the most of her time there. She made sure to always be there for both Leonard and Joanna, no matter the circumstance. They were her family until she went back to her own plane.

After hugging Joanna goodbye, Tonia went to clean up the kitchen. Even though she had special powers, she didn't use them most days. Tonia liked being domesticated It seemed to fit her.

She had just finished putting the dishes away when a funny feeling came over her. Without thinking, she popped out of the kitchen and to the spot right in front of Leonard, who was walking to the front door.

"Leonard, something isn't right," she said just as the sickening sound of metal crashing filled the air.

[identity profile] julepsnmedicine.livejournal.com 2010-08-10 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
When Tonia suddenly appeared in front of him, Leonard nearly jumped out of his skin. Before he could ask what was going on, though, she was speaking just as he heard the crash.

"What the...?"

Running back to the road, he looked toward the curve to see that the motorcycle had hit a tree, leaving smoking wreckage. And a limp body lying on the ground.

"Tonia, call an ambulance!" he yelled before he took off running.

When he reached the man, he dropped down to the ground, first reaching to check his pulse. It was thready and fading, which wasn't a good sign. A quick check of his neck and back told him he hadn't broken those, so he carefully turned him over. He wasn't breathing either, so he started CPR, praying that another vehicle didn't come around the corner at that moment.

[identity profile] lttbarrows.livejournal.com 2010-08-10 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Tonia hurried toward the sound, stopping when Leonard told her to call the ambulance. She wanted to tell him that she could heal the person but something held her back. Leonard needed to fix this on his own so she turned and went back to the house.

Once she'd done as he had asked, Tonia went back outside. Going to where the body was, she stood back as Leonard performed CPR. Tonia anxiously shifted from foot-to-foot, wishing there was more she could do, but she couldn't. Even if she tried to use her powers, she was sure they wouldn't work.

When the ambulance showed, the paramedics came out and started to help Leonard with the man. As they got him stable, they placed him on a stretcher and carried him toward the back of the vehicle.

"Go with them," Tonia told Leonard. "I'll catch up later."

[identity profile] julepsnmedicine.livejournal.com 2010-08-11 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Leonard continued working on the man until he started breathing again. His pulse was still thready, however, so he was glad when the ambulance appeared. The paramedics seemed happy enough to let him direct things, handing him equipment as he asked for it.

Once he was stable, he let the paramedics get him onto a hovergurney and steer him into the ambulance before looking over at Tonia. When she told him to go to the hospital with him, he nodded.

"All right. Thank you, darlin'," he told her. He leaned over and kissed her softly, resting his forehead to hers for a few moments before pulling away to climb into the ambulance.

As they headed toward the nearby hospital, one of the paramedics got out a fingerprint reader and held it to the man's forefinger so they could identify him.

"James Tiberius Kirk," the paramedic told Leonard before giving him a PADD with the medical information that popped up.

Leonard saw the birth record and let out a low whistle. "Holy shit, that was you."

"Who?" the paramedic asked.

"The kid who was born when the U.S.S. Kelvin was destroyed." When the paramedic gave him a blank look, he shook his head. "Never mind."

He knew of it, of course, because his mother had been a reporter. He then started reading it before looking over at him, seeing the list of hospitalizations. "Damn, kid. What in the hell's been going on your life?"

Once they arrived at the hospital, Leonard followed inside, filling the doctors that met them on what had happened.

[identity profile] lttbarrows.livejournal.com 2010-08-12 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Tonia hurried into the house and grabbed a few things. Once she had the keys to Leonard's car, along with the portable PADD in case Joanna's school called, she went out to car and got in. She was about to start the engine when Gabrielle popped up.

"I wish you wouldn't do that!" Tonia snapped at the other angel.

"I am sorry. I want you to know you did the right thing, and that it will be Leonard's place to keep helping James Kirk. The ones at the hospital will give uo but Leonard will know how to save him," Gabriella told her.

Tonia wanted to ask why but before she could, the other angel was gone. Taking a deep breath, she started the car and started toward the hospital.

When she got there, she hurried in and found Leonard. Once he ws finished speaking with the doctor, she took his arm and tugged him to a quiet area.

"Gabriella popped in after you left. She says it's important you save James Kirk and you'll know what to do," she said. "I'm not sure what she meant, but she's been right about other things."

Just then, one of the doctors came rushing by, saying they had to prep Jim for surgery due to internal bleeding. Tonia looked at Leonard and raised her eyebrows.

"Maybe you're supposed to scrub in," she said.

[identity profile] julepsnmedicine.livejournal.com 2010-08-13 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
After he had told the doctors what was going on, he watched as they scanned him, checking to see what damage had been done in the crash. He saw Tonia arrive while they were working, and he went over to her, joining her so they could speak.

"I'm supposed to...?"

When the doctors said they were going to surgery, Leonard looked over at Tonia before nodding. He gave her a kiss and then stopping the doctor, asking to be allowed to scrub in. The woman looked at him for a moment before nodding and telling him to follow.

Once he was in scrubs and then had scrubbed up, he went into the operation room with the other doctors, assisting with the surgery. As they worked on fixing his internal organs, he frowned, noticing something on the monitor.

"Hold on," he said. "Look. What is..."

He had the nurse focus on the area, and when he saw what it was, he couldn't believe it.

"A bullet. Some son of a bitch shot this kid," he muttered.

They quickly located where the bullet had entered, and once they got it out, they set to work getting him mended. James Kirk was lucky. If he had been hit somewhere else, he probably would died instantly.

After they finished, James was moved to post-op recovery while the doctor thanked Leonard for being there.

"He would have died without you."

Nodding, Leonard then went out to Tonia and enfolded her in his arms.

"He's gonna be okay."

[identity profile] lttbarrows.livejournal.com 2010-08-13 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
Tonia nodded and watched Leonard go help them operate on Jim. While she was gone, she went to the waiting room and sat down. She was worried this wouldn't work out, and she was pretty sure there was something special about Jim Kirk. If there wasn't, then Gabrielle would have never came to her.

After a while, she took to pacing around the waiting room as she waited for Leonard to finish. When he came out, she hurried over, and hugged him close. "I knew you could do it," she whispered to him.

She pulled back and took him to sit down in the waiting room. "I wish I knew what's going on with Kirk but Gabriella didn't tell me anything," she told him. "But he has to be pretty special for her to come here."

After about an hour, one of the nurses came out. "Mister Kirk would like to speak to you, doctor," she said with Leonard.

Tonia stood with him and went to the room. Jim was awake and he looked at them.

"Which one of you saved my life?" he asked.

[identity profile] julepsnmedicine.livejournal.com 2010-08-14 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
Breathing in deeply, Leonard nodded. It had been a long time since had been involved in something like that, and the adrenalin was slowly starting to wear off. So he was glad to let her take him over to one of the chairs to sit down.

As she told him that she wasn't completely sure what was going on, he nodded. "That kid's been through a lot of hell, that's for sure. He's been hospitalized before, and someone shot him, which is undoubtedly why he crashed into that tree. I just hope that what I did today is enough."

Closing his eyes, he rested his head to her shoulder and closed his eyes, trying to let himself relax.

He wasn't sure how long it was before they were called back to recovery. Seeing the younger man and looking better than he had not that long ago made him smile.

"I...uh...that would be me," he said, stepping over to the bed. "Leonard McCoy. And I've gotta say, I'm glad I was there to help ya. How are ya feelin'?"

[identity profile] doesntdosheep.livejournal.com 2010-08-14 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
Jim felt as if he'd been ran over by a damn truck. According to the hot nurse, he'd been in an accident with his motorcycle, which pissed him off. He'd worked hard to get that bike up and running, and now it was totaled. And when she told him the police would want to speak to him since he had been shot, he sighed and rubbed his forehead. He didn't remember the accident but he remembered being shot at.

Fucking bastard actually hit him.

When the nurse said one of the doctors had found the bullet when no one else saw it, Jim knew he needed to at least thank the guy. So when the doctor and a woman walked in, he found himself grinning at the girl before turning his attention to the doctor.

"I feel like I was shot, then in a motorcycle accident," he muttered.

"Do you know who shot you?" the woman asked.

Jim let out a painful sigh. "My stepfather. When I lived there, he took his anger out on me, which was fine because I ran faster then him and eventually learned how to fight back. I moved out several months ago and I came back to find he's now taking it out on my mom so we got into a fight and I left to go find my mom and he started shooting at me," he said before he looked at Leonard. "How did you find me? I was out in the middle of nowhere."

[identity profile] julepsnmedicine.livejournal.com 2010-08-14 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, Leonard certainly wasn't going to argue with that assessment. He was sure that that having that happen was an entirely unique feeling unto itself, but at least he as going to be okay.

And as he started to explain what had happened, what he had seen in his medical records started to make a lot of sense. Abuse. All the classic signs. He hoped that they were able to get the bastard for attempted murder because it was obvious that this had been going on for far too long.

"You crashed near our home," Leonard told him. "We heard you go into the tree, so I went to help ya while Tonia called the ambulance. Good thing too. God knows how long it might've been since you were found, otherwise."

He didn't, of course, tell him that he'd been told it was important that he help him, for whatever reason. The kid had been through enough that day.

"Do you want us to see if we can track down your mom?" he asked since he had said he had been leaving to go find her.

[identity profile] lttbarrows.livejournal.com 2010-08-15 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Tonia shook her head, not believing someone could be so cruel to another human being. It was something she often pondered it but could never find an answer to her questions. Of course, not all people were bad. Leonard was proof of that.

"Thanks for finding me," Jim quietly said as he shifted in the bed. He then furrowed his brow and was quiet for a moment. "I think...yeah. Could you try to find her for me? I don't want her going back to the house."

"Do you have a number?" Tonia asked as she pulled out her PADD.

Once Jim had given her one, she dialed it. After a few moments, a woman answered. Tonia explained to her that Jim had been in an accident and was in the hospital. After speaking to her for a few moments, Tonia ended the call and went back to the bed.

"She said she'll be here soon," she said.

"Thank you," Jim said with a painful smile.

[identity profile] iowanengineer.livejournal.com 2010-08-15 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Winona could barely see out of her swollen right eye as she brought her vehicle to a stop outside where her son was living now after hours of driving around, not sure what to do. Her hands were still shaking as she held on to the wheel almost afraid to let go. She had no idea what she was going to say to Jim when she saw him.

Maybe she should start with an apology.

Finally getting out of the car, she hurried up to Jim's apartment and rang the doorchime, waiting. There was no answer, though. Just as she was trying to decide whether to stay and wait for him to come home, her PADD suddenly beeped with an incoming call, so she pulled it out to answer, trying to keep her eye out of view.

When the woman on the other told her that Jim had been in an accident, she felt her heart drop and was immediately on her way out to the car again.

Soon, she was arriving at the hospital, and when she got inside, a nurse tried to pull her aside to help her, but she waved her off, demanding to know where her son was. Finally, they told her, and she hurried to the room.

"Jim?" she asked as she entered to find him in bed, obviously just having been through hell. The woman who had called her and a man in scrubs were standing there was well. "What happened? Are you...? Are you going to be okay?"

[identity profile] doesntdosheep.livejournal.com 2010-08-15 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
As they waited for his mom to show, Jim felt his stomach start to churn. His eyes continued to tick toward the clock, and he got more nervous by the moment. Not because he didn't want to see her; Jim was worried she'd gone out to the house and Frank had done something to her.

When she finally arrived, Jim found himself reaching out to her. He took her hand and thickly swallowed. "I'm going to be okay but promise me you won't go back there," he said. "I went out there to tell him to stop touching you, and he shot me. Then I got into a motorcycle accident but Leonard and Tonia found me. Just don't go back there, Mom. Please."

Tonia looked from mother to son and cleared her throat. "If you need help getting your things out and a place to stay for a while, we can help you," she said.

"You two have already done so much," Jim said.

"We like helping people," Tonia said as she glanced at Leonard.

[identity profile] julepsnmedicine.livejournal.com 2010-08-16 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm not going back," Winona promised her son as Leonard watched from across the room with Tonia. "We got into another fight this morning, and he hit me again, so I left. I was at your place to find you, so I could tell you when Tonia called me."

Leaning over, she kissed his forehead. "I'm so sorry, Jim. For everything he did to you, I'm so sorry. Thank god you're going to be all right."

Leonard felt his throat tighten as he watched, and when Tonia told them that they could help them, he looked over at her, nodding in agreement.

"We're certainly not gonna walk away," he said. "Anything we can do, we're glad to help."

Straightening up, Winona gave them a grateful smile and nodded. "Thank you," she said softly. "I don't want to go back there by myself."

"Then one of us'll go with you," Leonard promised. "First, though, why don'cha let me look at that eye and check to make sure he didn't do any other damage."

She nodded and went over to sit down so he could examine her.

[identity profile] lttbarrows.livejournal.com 2010-08-16 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
As Tonia watched Jim with his mother, she reached down and took Leonard's hand into hers. It still confused her as to how some humans could treat others. Especially when it came to men being bullies and abusing others.

"Good," Jim said when Winona said she didn't want to go back by herself. "I don't trust him."

When Leonard went over to check Winona over, Tonia went over to Jim's bed to ask him where the house was. If anyone could handle Frank, it was her. However, before she could, two police officers came in to question Jim.

They asked how he'd gotten the gun shot wound, and he was honest with them. He then said Frank had hit his mother, too.

After taking his statement, they told all of them they were going out to arrest Frank. Tonia nodded and watched them leave before she looked over at Winona.

"Do you want to wait until they're done before going out there?" she asked.

[identity profile] iowanengineer.livejournal.com 2010-08-17 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
Winona closed her eyes as Leonard checked her eye while listening to Tonia speak to Jim. No matter what had happened to her, she was more upset that she had let Frank hurt her son for so long, and she swore that she was going to make it up to him somehow. She wasn't completely sure how at the moment, but she would.

"You've got a pretty good shiner there, but I can take care of that easy," Leonard told her. "Looks like you're okay otherwise."

Just then, the police arrived, and Winona steeled herself as they questioned Jim and her about what had happened. At least it seemed that what had happened to Jim wouldn't been in vain, and Frank would be out of their lives.

"Yes," she said when Tonia asked if she wanted to wait to go out to the house. The last thing she wanted was to be there when they arrested him since she didn't know what he might do.

While they waited, Leonard got what he needed to fix her eye. Soon, she could see clearly again, and not that long after, the police called the room to inform them that Frank had been arrested.

"Thank god," she murmured, reaching over to take Jim's hand.

[identity profile] lttbarrows.livejournal.com 2010-08-17 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Tonia was glad the cops were able to arrest Frank. She knew this wasn't over for Jim and Winona, but it was a step in the right direction. They would be safe now and wouldn't have to worry about him hurting them.

Of course, she was still curious as to how Leonard played into all of this. From the get go, Tonia knew he was destined for something great and that he would change the course of events. Had saving Jim's life done so? She really couldn't see how saving his life would have a huge impact on things.

Only time would tell, she supposed.

Once Jim and Winona were finished talking, Tonia offered to drive Winona out to the house. "We'll come back once we have her things at the house," she told Leonard.

They had an extra bedroom and Tonia had no problem with letting Winona stay there for a few days. Once Jim was out of the hospital, they would help them find a more permanent place to stay.

"Which way do I go?" she asked Winona once they were in the car.

[identity profile] iowanengineer.livejournal.com 2010-08-19 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Winona still wasn't sure how her son had gotten so lucky that he had made it to a place where he would be found by a doctor before he had finally crashed, but she was glad that he had. Somehow, it seemed, someone had been looking over Jim ever since the day of his birth.

When Tonia offered to go ahead and take her out to the house so they could get her belongings and get it over with, she nodded in agreement.

"Let's get this over with," she said softly.

Heading out with her to the vehicle, she climbed in and took a deep breath. Soon she was guiding her to the house she had shared with Frank - or more the house she shared with him when she was on Earth. Knowing what had been going on there when she hadn't been around hurt more than she could even say. She had thought she was doing the right thing, continuing to serve after George had died, thinking it was what he would have wanted.

Now, though, she was thinking that she should have stayed. Then she would have known.

When they arrived at the house, Winona took a deep breath and reminded herself that Frank wouldn't be in there. She then went inside with Tonia and quickly started gathering everything together, putting them into several bags. As she emptied one of her drawers, she pulled out a holo of her and George that had been taken while she had been pregnant. Pressing the button to turn it on, she watched them, smiling and laughing as George embraced her from behind, resting her hands over her stomach.

Reaching up, she wiped her eyes.

[identity profile] lttbarrows.livejournal.com 2010-08-19 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
Following Winona's directions, Tonia drove her out to the house. When they got there, she went inside with the other woman but stayed in the living room. Sitting down on the couch, she folded her hands on her lap and waited for the older woman to finish with her packing.

After some time, Tonia started to get a little worried so she went to find where Winona was. She peeked into the bedroom and saw her watching a holo so she was silent. When it finished, she stepped inside and gave Winona a soft smile.

"Is there anything you need help with?" she asked as she reached out to take her hand into hers, trying her best to comfort her in any way she could. She knew she couldn't change the past but she could be there for her now.

"Does Jim have anything here that he may like?" she quietly asked.

[identity profile] iowanengineer.livejournal.com 2010-08-20 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
When Tonia stepped into the room, Winona shut off the holo and gave her a smile before putting the base away in the bag. Taking a breath, she looked around the room.

"I think I have everything I want from in here," she said before giving her a bag. "There's a couple of things downstairs I want, and a box of George's things in the basement. There's some things in there that I was to give to Jim."

She had never been able to bring herself to get rid of the things that were in that box, but she had always kept it downstairs out of the way of Frank. She wasn't sure if he even knew it was there.

Going downstairs with her, she set her other bags down. "Could you get the dreamcatcher and the books on the shelf?" she asked. "I'll go get the box."

Going downstairs, she shoved some of Frank's things aside and found the box where she had hidden it. After pulling it out, she picked it up and took it upstairs.

"I think this is everything," she said. "Anything else can be left behind."

[identity profile] lttbarrows.livejournal.com 2010-08-20 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
Nodding, Tonia did as Winona asked and got the books and dreamcatcher. She found an empty box and put them inside before taking the packed boxes and bags to the car. Once they were inside the trunk, she went back inside to help with the rest of the stuff.

"All right. We can drop all of this off at the house, then go back to the hospital," she said, knowing Winona would want to see her son.

It didn't take them long to get to the house. Tonia opened the door and they placed the boxes and bags in the guest bedroom before leaving again. Getting back in the car, Tonia started to drive them toward the hospital.

When they got there, they went back to Jim's room and Tonia smiled before going over to stand with Leonard.

"We got everything needed and took it back to the house," she told him as she reached down to take his hand. "How are the two of you doing?"

"Bones was telling me about his homemade moonshine," Jim said with a smirk.

"Bones?" Tonia said as she raised her eyebrows.

Jim softly shrugged. "I think it fits," he said.

[identity profile] julepsnmedicine.livejournal.com 2010-08-21 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
While Tonia and Winona were gone, Leonard went and got changed out of his scrubs back into his own clothes. Once he was done, he headed back to Jim's room and sat with him, talking to him while they waited.

The kid turned out to be a damn good guy despite the things he had been through. Sure, he still had some growing up to do, but Leonard was sure that he was going to be something once he decided where he was going in his life. As they talked, he found that he also appreciated a good drink, so he ended up telling him about his family's moonshine recipe, which of course they all referred to as whiskey so as not to draw attention to it.

"I'll have to get you a bottle or two sometime," he told him just before Tonia and Winona came back.

When Jim called him Bones, he found himself smiling. "I actually kinda like it."

"So how long do you think Jim is going to be in here?" Winona asked as she sat down in one of the other chairs. Leonard was glad to see that the trauma to her eye looked to be completely gone now.

"The end of the week, I think," he told her. "Just want to make sure that he doesn't have any complications."

"That's not too bad," she said.

"You all hungry?" Leonard asked. "I wouldn't want to subject a healing man to hospital food, so maybe we could order something in?"
